The location descriptions are structured the same way as in a standard adventure module. It's well organized and easy to find the information you're looking for (thanks in no small part to its index of locations). ORGANIZATION - The book is nominally 283 pages long, but it's really longer than that as there are additional unnumbered pages of maps, including one on the back inside cover. Throughout most of the book, the illustrations are fairly mundane, but in the chapter describing new monsters, each entry includes a well-executed drawing of the creature in question. This is most often true when it comes to new monsters, and City State really shines in this regard. Everything is well thought out and described in sufficient detail.ĪRTWORK - When it comes to products like this, I generally don't think art is all that important unless it illustrates something that would be difficult to describe to a group of players.

Location maps are printed twice: with the location entry itself, and again grouped together in the back of the book.ĭESCRIPTION - The book gives extensive background on the laws & societal norms of the city state, politics and organizations, rumors and legends, and both the various public streets and shops and (as previously mentioned) the many potential indoor and underground adventuring locations. Famous as much for its brutality as for its size and wide variety of citizenry, the City State of the Invincible Overlord beckons to adventurers throughout. Each of the location maps is fully keyed and described, as are the characters & creatures to be found there. MAPS - Unlike some products I've seen, this book not only thoroughly maps the city, itself, but also provides detailed maps of the major locations characters are likely to spend time in: various dungeons, temples, schools, ruins, the city jail, as well as the extensive sewer system.
City state of the invincible overlord update#
This has been update to the d20 format from Necromancer Games found here. I've bought a number of city books for the d20 gaming system (see my other reviews for comparisons), and I think this is one of the best I've seen so far. This was later released as the 62 Revised City State of the Invincible Overlord Playing Aid.
City state of the invincible overlord license#
After securing a license from TSR Bob Bledsaw and Bill Owens went to GenCon with sets of 34' by 44' inch maps of the City-State and a plan to sell. The map of the City State of the Invincible is the product that started it all for Judges Guild. Remembering the detail in the original City State book published back in the 1970s, I had high hopes for this, and I wasn't disappointed. City State of the Invincible Overlord, an Overview.
